Medway Council

Six Trainee Housing Information Officers successfully recruited for Medway Council.
25th September 2009
The task the Kickstart team set out to achieve was to find 10 candidates for Trainee Housing Information Officer roles at Medway Council. The ten selected candidates would then undergo an intensive training course before being whittled down to six successful applicants who would work as Trainee Housing Information Officers at Medway Council.
After a local advertising campaign consisting of local print adverts, job centre vacancy listings and online job board postings, 38 candidates were selected from pre-screening to attend an Assessment Day at the St George’s Centre, Chatham Maritime. As the day progressed 38 became 18, before the final 10 were selected after further testing and interviews.
After successful completion of training, six candidates were offered postions at Medway Council as Housing Information Officers. Placements for the remaining four candidates may also be made with neighbouring local authorities who have expressed an interest in taking on more Housing Information Officers.
Vanessa Wilson, Head of Housing Solutions at Medway Council, commented:
“The cost-effective Kickstart programme showed that traditional methods of recruitment would not have brought this calibre of candidate for a trainee vacancy. Many of the attendees were long-term unemployed so to give these people an opportunity to get back into work is a big bonus and supports our regeneration programmes, which we are 100% committed to. Programmes like Kickstart support the creation of local job opportunities, especially when they are well executed and confidently handled like they were today.”
