IT skills gap grows

Outsourcing IT jobs overseas has increased the UK’s technology skills gap.

A report published by Income Data Services (Pay in IT 2008) reveals the increasing skills gap emerging in the IT profession in the UK. As a result of outsourcing jobs overseas there are now fewer opportunities for IT graduates, resulting in a higher than average proportion out of work 6 months after completing their studies.

Perhaps this explains why fewer and fewer students are chosing to pursue IT qualifications, further accelerating the widening of that skills gap. Training Synergy director Dan Hanlon commented “ It’s a trend that we have been aware of for some time as we have seen increasing numbers of IT graduates looking for careers in training and more clients asking us to design and deliver training programmes for their offshore IT servicedesks.”
