Training Synergy Kickstarts Birmingham City Council to 2nd place at Sustainable Communities Awards 2008
A massively successful Tenant Recruitment Programme Project Managed by Training Synergy’s Siva Singh has brought Birmingham City Council’s work with its tenants to the notice of the judges at the ‘LGC & HSJ Sustainable Communities Awards’.
The Kickstart programme resulted in 120 tenants signing up for voluntary work with the housing department. “A new structure for tenant involvement at constituency level is making sure that voices from across the city’s diverse population are being heard” concluded the judges. Although narrowly missing first place for the Community Project Award, the success of the programme was ‘Highly commended’.
As well as encouraging more participation for tenants, for the volunteers this has also meant the chance to acquire new skills and the opportunity to develop future careers in the housing sector. And not only is the council working more closely with tenant groups, it is also developing a potential skills resource pool from within the community to sustain future staffing requirements.
The Local Government Chronicle and Health Service Journal who organise the Awards are clear about the criteria for the awards: “Partnership working and localism are central to the ethos of these awards”. The judges task is to recognise “the best innovations in the country”. One more validation for Kickstart and one more success story for community cohesion.
