About this course:
This course aims to improve the performance of officers representing the local authority in the Magistrate Court when applying for liability orders and dealing with committal to prison. The guide includes full references to the relevant legislation and case-law. Much of this guide identifies the forms and processes necessary for taking a case to the Magistrate’s Court and seeks to explain their significance and importance in the proceedings.

Day 1
- The importance of correct practices and procedures.
- The relevance and impact of Council policies.
- Links with and the influence of, other agencies and external bodies.
- Influence and value of local strategic partnerships.
- Preparing for court action – significance, importance and influence of action in the Magistrates Court for liability order applications and immediate action following the issue of Liability Orders.
- Examination of the relevant case-law and its impact on court procedures, practices and presentation.
Day 2
- Dos and don’ts in preparation and presentation.
- Case studies – pre-prepared and prepared by groups of delegates.
- Role play – the courts in action.
- Course ends with a discussion on the lessons learned during the course.
