This one day course is intended to enable learners to explore issues around learning disabilities that may impact on their practice.

     Learning Outcomes

    By the end of this course learners should be able to understand:

    • History and background to current learning disability services, and the effect of institutionalization and labelling
    • Some of the causes of learning disabilities, and when and why there may be advantages and disadvantages to knowing these
    • The social model of support in relation to working with people with learning disabilities
    • The impact of learning disability on individuals and their families
    • The principles of choice, empowerment, dignity, respect and individuality in relation to their work with people with learning disabilities

    This is a participative course and methods will include:

    • Group work
    • Word shower/discussion
    • Role play (where appropriate)
    • Communication games
    • Feedback
    • PowerPoint presentations
