Risk Assessment and Management

Risk assessment and management is an essential skill for health and social care staff whose role is to support and enable service users to participate in as wide a range of activities as they choose.

This one day course is intended to enable participants to undertake risk assessments and develop risk management plans that link to service user support plans.
The course will also explore how their communication has an impact on the way that others respond to them; the different ways in which individuals may communicate and receive messages; and how they can address the values and principles underpinning positive communication with those whom they support.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course learners should be able to understand:
- The nature of risk in everyday life
- The risks that may impact upon vulnerable service users
- How to assess this risk
- How to develop risk management plans that will minimize risk
- The importance of involving the service user in developing and agreeing risk assessments and management plans
- How to recognise the link between risk assessment and safeguarding from abuse
- That an identified risk should not necessarily mean that an individual should not undertake an activity (looking for alternative solutions)
- When to involve others in the process
