Understanding Dementia

This course aims to develop a basic knowlegde of dementia for care and support workers.
- Understanding Dementia
Many workers supporting elders within services will come across individuals with dementia. In addition, staff working with people with learning disabilities and mental health issues may work with individuals with a diagnosis of dementia.
This one day course is intended to provide an introduction to care and support workers with a basic understanding of dementia, how to recognise signs and symptoms, and ways in which they can best support the people with whom they work.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course learners should be able to understand:
- What is dementia
- The different types of dementia (and causes)
- The effects of dementia on the individual
- Possible signs and symptoms
- What to do if someone exhibits a sign or symptom of dementia
- Understanding he experiences of individuals with dementia
- Key care and support issues
- Good practice in managing these
- Working with family and other support networks
- Supporting communication
- The legal framework in respect of dementia
Training methods
This is a participative course and methods will include:
- Group work
- Word shower/discussion
- Role play (where appropriate)
- Communication games
- Feedback
- Powerpoint presentations
- Handouts
